How I actually use Claude Code + Cowork
How I actually use Claude Code + Cowork
Two tools inside one $20 subscription. Together they replace at least four others I used to pay for separately.
Here's what each one is for, what I don't use them for, and the rule I follow when I'm deciding between them.
TOOL 01
Claude Code
For when I'd otherwise pay a developer.
Claude Code lives in my terminal. I describe what I want to build and it writes the code, runs it, fixes its own errors, and asks me before doing anything destructive. I've shipped internal tools through it that would have cost me four-figure quotes from agencies.
What I use it for
- Internal tools that don't justify a SaaS; lead trackers, simple CRMs, custom dashboards
- One-off scripts: scraping, formatting, cleaning data, anything I'd normally Google for an hour
- Automations that connect things no Zapier integration covers
- Anything where the brief is "I just need this one thing to exist"
What I don't use it for
- Production apps I'd ship to customers, different rigour needed
- Anything where Cowork would be faster
- Quick questions where I just want an answer, not a build
If your problem sounds like "I need a tool that doesn't exist," start here.
TOOL 02
Cowork
For when I'd otherwise hire an assistant.
Cowork runs on my desktop and acts like a junior team member who already knows how I work. It reads files, clicks around, runs research across tabs, and executes multi-step workflows without me babysitting it. I leave it tasks the way I'd leave them with someone I trust.
What I use it for
- Deep research that would otherwise eat three hours of tab-switching
- Pulling data out of messy folders and consolidating it into one place
- Drafting first versions of decks, docs, and reports from raw inputs
- Anything I'd otherwise post on Upwork"
What I don't use it for
- Quick one-off questions, Claude chat is faster
- Code-heavy work, Claude Code is sharper for that
- Anything I need answered in the next five seconds
If your problem sounds like "I don't have time to do this myself," start here.
THE RULE
When to reach for which
Most people overcomplicate this. Three modes. One subscription.
All three live inside Claude Pro. That's the whole point. You're not picking between AI tools, you're picking which mode to use for the task in front of you.
The reason most people overpay for AI is they don't know what's already inside what they're paying for. Open the same subscription you already have, but use it the way it was actually built to be used.
Cancel the four. Keep the matcha.
