Stop buying AI tools.
What Claude (paid) already does, and the 3 questions to ask before buying
01 · THE PROBLEM
98% of the AI tools you're being shown aren't worth your money.
Every week there's a new tool, a new “game changer,” a new founder pushing it. Most of the people pushing them haven't built anything real with AI. They've built an affiliate link.
Here's what I've actually seen working with 200+ clients across the world, the bottleneck is almost never the tool. It's how you're using the one you already have.
Almost everyone I work with is paying for two or three AI subscriptions, using none of them properly, and considering a fourth. The fourth won't help. Using one of them properly will.
The tool isn't the problem. The way you're using it is.
02 · THE STACK
What Claude (paid) actually replaces.
This isn't a list of features. It's the work most people are paying multiple tools to do, that one $20-a-month subscription already handles, once you set it up properly.
None of this requires technical skill. It requires sitting with Claude for two hours and actually learning how to use it, instead of bouncing between five tools that all do 20% of the job.
03 · THE FILTER
3 questions before you buy another AI tool.
Run any tool you're tempted by through these three. If you can't get past question one honestly, you don't need the new tool yet.
01 · Am I actually using Claude properly first?
Not “do I have it open sometimes.” Have you set up Projects with your context? Are you giving it real instructions, or one-line prompts? If the honest answer is no, the next tool won't fix that. It'll just be the next thing you don't use properly.
02 · Does this tool do something Claude genuinely can't?
Or does it just wrap something Claude can do in a nicer UI? A lot of “AI tools” right now are a prompt and a logo. You're not paying for capability. You're paying for the prompt someone else wrote.
03 · If I gave Claude two hours of focused use, would I still need this?
Two hours of actually building a workflow inside Claude beats two months of trialing new tools. Most of the time, by the end of those two hours, the tool you were about to buy looks like a feature you already have.
If you can't say yes to all three, the answer isn't a new tool. It's an afternoon with the one you already have.
04 · WHEN TO BUILD INSTEAD
The only time a new tool makes sense.
There is a point where Claude alone isn't enough. It's not when you're missing a feature. It's when the same workflow is running so often that pasting things into a chat window becomes the bottleneck.
That's the moment we build a small internal app on top of Claude. We've built over 20 of them for our work and for clients. Paid almost nothing for the stack underneath. The shift from “use the chat” to “build a small app” usually happens when one of these is true:
- Same workflow runs 50+ times a week. Pasting becomes friction. Build the app.
- Non-technical teammates need to run it. They won't learn prompts. They'll use a button.
- Data is too sensitive or too large to keep pasting into chat. Move it behind an interface.
- The prompt structure is fixed and only the inputs change. That's an app waiting to be built
Notice what's not on this list - “saw a reel about it.” That's never been a reason to build anything.
